Five persons including two women and three children were injured during a terrorist attack on the Security forces camp in Kalat (15 July).

KPK

Unidentified gunmen shot and injured DSP Farooq Zaman near Ghundo police post, Baizai area, Mardan district (10 July).

Comments & Analysis: Earlier terrorists had attacked this check post in December 2022 in which a police constable was martyred. It appears that miscreants and terrorists have relatively easy access to this area due to their local facilitators and informers. Intelligence operations ought to be launched to trace and track these elements for necessary action against them.

There have been reports of involvement of Afghan nationals in criminal and terrorist activities in KPK for quite some time. Reportedly, eighteen (18) families of Dagai village, tehsil Razzar of Swabi district received threatening letters from unknown miscreants. The letter contained directions to withdraw their money from their bank accounts and keep the same, along with gold, at their homes otherwise be ready to face dire consequence (15 July). Police took swift action and arrested a gang of six criminals who had written this letter. Rs 3 million was recovered from them (17 July).

Comments & Analysis: TTP, its affiliates and pretenders make efforts to extort money from the public. Their attempts fail to get the desired results because usually people don’t keep money and gold at home. Now they seem to have come up with a novel idea to first coerce them to withdraw their money from banks so that they may readily extort the desired amount from them. It is an indicator that people and banks are the likely targets of these elements. Local administration and police have taken effective action by arresting the miscreants involved in these activities.

Police and FC are being regularly targeted by the terrorists for the last two years. It is high time to devise an effective strategy for the security of the police stations and police patrol parties. It is not a news that the terrorists have acquired night vision telescope fitted American sniper guns. By now the police and LEAs should have been ready to face such weapons. Every police stations should have at least four trained men armed with night vision goggles and sniper guns. Intelligence work should be enhanced to locate the local supporters and sleeper cells.
