Overview
The reporting period of 1–15 January 2026 reflects a marked escalation in militant violence, asymmetric warfare, and targeted killings, particularly across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, with sustained pressure on law enforcement agencies (LEAs), CTD units, and security forces. The pattern of attacks demonstrates operational resilience and tactical adaptation by militant networks, including the use of IEDs, quadcopters, targeted assassinations, and infrastructure sabotage.
While security forces maintained operational momentum through intelligence-based operations (IBOs), the frequency, dispersion, and lethality of attacks indicate persistent gaps in area control, early warning, and local intelligence penetration, especially in southern KP, North Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Bajaur, and Kalat.

Comments & Analysis: Balochistan saw targeted killings, railway sabotage, and attacks on officials, alongside continued insurgent propaganda and recruitment efforts. The exposure of external coordination networks and the identification of overseas conspirators by the Red Notice Cell point to a hybrid threat model, combining local militancy with transnational facilitation.
The merger of the Levies Force into the provincial police represents a structural reform, but short-term vulnerabilities during the transition period persist.

- Targeted killings of clerics, professors, peace committee members, and police officials, aimed at eroding state authority and local cooperation.
Despite multiple successful IBOs eliminating high-value terrorist operatives, the retaliatory pattern of attacks suggests operational cells remain intact with sustained cross-border facilitation.

Comments & Analysis: Punjab and Sindh experienced isolated terror-linked incidents, criminal violence, and sectarian-sensitive cases. Relations with Pakistan

Afghanistan, reportedly with the help and support of IB India, has unleashed an intense malicious propaganda against Pakistan, on social media.
Comments & Analysis: Persistent cross-border militancy remains the most significant external security challenge. Taliban assurances have not translated into measurable action against TTP elements. The presence of multiple armed resistance groups within Afghanistan adds further volatility.
CHINA
Pakistan–China Relations
Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong praised Pakistan’s growing global influence and reaffirmed China’s commitment to the all-weather partnership. During the 7th Strategic Dialogue in Beijing, both sides urged the Afghan Taliban to act against terrorist groups and upgraded CPEC to Version 2.0 (5,6.1.26).

Comments & Analysis: Pakistan–China engagement intensified, especially on CPEC security, with enhanced coordination on protection of Chinese nationals, cybersecurity, and rapid-response mechanisms. The upgrade of CPEC to Version 2.0 underscores mutual strategic commitment but also increases the security burden.

IRAN
Protests continued nationwide amid a crackdown. US President Donald Trump backed protesters and considered military options, while Iran warned of retaliation. Iranian leadership emphasized restraint and denied foreign involvement (1–15.1.26).
Comments & Analysis: A US-led strike on Iran could destabilize the region, disrupt global energy markets, and create security risks for Pakistan, especially along its western border. A cautious and neutral diplomatic approach is advised.
MIDDLE EAST
- US and allied forces launched Operation Hawkeye Strike in Syria against ISIS targets near Palmyra (6.1.26).
- The 22nd extraordinary OIC session in Jeddah condemned Israel’s actions and reaffirmed support for Palestine and Somalia (10.1.26).
Comments & Analysis: Iran’s internal unrest and escalating rhetoric from the United States raise the risk of regional spillover effects, including energy market disruption and border instability. Pakistan’s neutral stance remains strategically prudent.
USA
US Military Operation in Venezuela
US forces carried out Operation Absolute Resolve, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and transferring him to New York, prompting global condemnation and warnings from the UN over sovereignty violations (4–7.1.26).
US Visa Suspension
The US announced suspension of immigrant visa processing for 74 countries, including Pakistan, effective 21 January, citing welfare dependency concerns (15.1.26).
Overall Assessment
Pakistan’s security forces continue to demonstrate resolve, operational capability, and resilience, but the threat environment remains adaptive, persistent, and externally enabled. Without deeper structural reforms, enhanced intelligence fusion, and sustained border pressure, the current trajectory risks prolonged low-intensity conflict in western regions.
